Birding Hotspots
Grouse Mountain
There is plenty to do and see at Grouse Mountain. Challenge yourself on the famous Grouse Grind hike, or take the scenic Skyride up to the top where you’ll get some epic views of the city, and, in the summer, access to the many hiking trails. In the spring and summer, you may encounter some of the 99 species in the area, and check out the daily falconry displays with Birds in Motion where you can get an up close and personal learning experience with birds of prey.
Year-round residents of the area include the Great-horned Owl, Bald Eagle, Chestnut-backed Chickadee and Sooty Grouse, so keep an eye out for them no matter what season you visit.
Capilano Suspension Bridge
Reach new heights at Capilano Suspension Bridge, one of Vancouver’s most popular attractions. This iconic suspension bridge is at the core of a large and diverse park full of activities to discover.
If you are looking for a hands-on learning experience, pay a visit to Raptors Ridge. This educational facility is committed to educating the public about raptors – birds of prey such as owls, hawks, and falcons – and to wildlife conservation through interactive exhibits and engaging presentations.

Horseshoe Bay
The village of Horseshoe Bay is worth a visit not only for its bustling centre with many shops, cafes and restaurants but also for the more than 150 species of birds that have been spotted in the area year-round.
The mild climate makes the area a popular overwintering site for waterfowl, and sightings of Barrow’s Goldeneye, Western Grebes and Pelagic Cormorants are common. Spend some time discerning your gulls and you may spot a Ring-Billed or Short-Billed amongst the flocks that frequent the area.
Maplewood Flats
The Maplewood Flats Conservation Area is a 300-acre area spanning mudflats, salt marshes, mixed forest, rough grassland and freshwater marshes, managed by the Wild Bird Trust of BC. It is an incredible example of collaborative conservation management. The Maplewood Flats are host to more than 250 species throughout the year.
Be sure to stop by the greeter hut on arrival to pick up a detailed map of the site, and find out about the latest sightings at this bird-watching paradise.
