Barn Swallow

A small and quick sign of summer, barn swallows are found zipping around ponds, lakes, marshes, meadows, farm fields – basically anywhere with an open area and plenty of tasty bugs. Dark blue backs and rust-coloured underparts help differentiate between them and other local swallows, with their long, forked tails are the best starting point for identification.

Active seasons

Spring and summer.

How/where to find

Dawn or dusk at an open field or still body of water (ponds and small lakes) will be your best bet for finding barn (and other) swallows darting low in the sky.

You can find the Barn Swallow throughout every Region and Outpost on The BC Bird Trail!
