Violet-green Swallow

Tachycineta thalassina

A sign that warmer weather is arriving, these are often the first swallow species seen in the spring. With white underparts and darker backs, they can be difficult to tell apart from similar Tree Swallows. If you can’t see the violet and green backs clearly (vs. dark blue on a Tree Swallow), look for a white patch at the base of the tail and up the side of the face.
